Beautiful Kinky Hair

Does it ever surprise you when you receive a complement about your natural hair? It surprises me sometimes especially if the person doesn't have kinky hair. I guessed for so long I believed people who weren't black or didn't have kinky hair thought kinky hair wasn't beautiful, so to have them say that my hair is beautiful is very eye opening, not all people believe kinky hair is ugly we've been conditioned to think so because what is presented in the media as beauty doesn't look like us or anyone we can relate to. If you've gone through this please share  your stories I'd love to hear them.

Rubber Bands: to use or not to use

Ok most naturals know that using rubber bands in our hair isn't even an option. But is there a time when it is ok to use them? This is a dilemma I came across a few days ago with my sister. When my younger sister wears her afro she brushes the front back, puts gel on it, and  uses a rubber band to hold it back. My older sister is natural too but doesn't quite know how to manage her natural hair yet so i was showing her how to detangle and style it and my younger sister suggested that she use a rubber band. I didn't agree with her suggestion because i know the damage rubber bands can do to your hair but my sister had a interesting point, she only uses them on the gelled part so it just slides back with no tangles, breakage etc. But what about when the hair dries? there is still a risk of getting the rubber band tangled. Tell me what you think about rubber bands.

Natural Hair Journey: Part 2

I didn't mind having short hair. It felt so good to not worry about new growth messing up my relaxed hair anymore. At this stage of my journey I experimented with making my own hair products. Making your own hair products is so much fun especially if your get some girlfriends together and you all just come up with your products. My sister and i would mix different carrier oils and essential oils together to come up with different moisturizers. my favorite is Shea butter. If you are a natural girl Shea butter is a must have! the smell takes some getting use to but over time you will get use to it and it is in some cases a defining factor when trying to figure out if you have real unrefined Shea butter because there are some imposter's out there! I've also tried herbal rinses. I don't have rinses as part of my hair routine but once in a while I will rinse my hair with herbs. My favorite herbs are rosemary and peppermint, peppermint leaves a clean tingling sensation on your scalp and rosemary stimulates hair growth. My favorite line of shampoo and conditioners by far is the organix brand they have many different kinds to choose from, I've tried coconut milk, and Shea butter. Coconut milk is my number 1 so far i haven't tried any others but my sister did try the vanilla I don't know if she liked it or not but i smelled it and it smells Delicious! The only down side of the product is that its like 5 to 6 dollars each and in this economy that is a stretch for me considering how small the bottles are, but if money is no problem i defiantly recommend it. A low cost alternative to the coconut milk is the suave brand in coconut, it smells great and is very affordable for the smaller bottles i paid less than a dollar a piece. i believe it was .98 to be exact the bigger bottles are more but no more than $2.00 a piece for conditioner and shampoo. I made lots of mistakes also like trying to skip out on wrapping my hair up at night, which is a no, no for a natural girl. i guess it was because i was preggers and tired all the time. Trust me not wearing your satin or silk cap, bonnet or scarf will catch up with you i know because of experience. My hair was always dry and breaking but i eventually got it right. Remember as natural women we have to maintain moisture and if your not sleeping on a satin or silk pillow your moisture is being sucked out of your hair so where a scarf or bonnet. I've also learned that braiding in sections before bed helps maintain moisture and prevents tangles so you don't have to detangle everyday. To be cont'd.......
